The Japan-America Society of Georgia (JASG) will host high school students from across the Southeast for the 2021 Japan Academic Challenge on March 20, 2021, beginning at 10:00 a.m. To ensure safety and public health during the current pandemic, this year’s language and trivia competition will be held online via Zoom. The Japan Academic Challenge is a quiz-show style competition that tests high school students’ knowledge of Japanese language, business/economy, current events, geography, history, politics and culture. With four levels of competition, the event aims to promote Japanese studies in a fun and engaging manner and showcase the hard work and knowledge students have about Japan.

Ten Georgia cities have sister city agreements with Japan and the University System of Georgia (USG) offers 35 study abroad programs to Japan in programs such as language, history, business and Japanese culture. Over 140 Japanese students were enrolled in USG schools in 2018 and Georgia hosts a variety of programs for Japanese students in the state. Atlanta and Georgia are regarded as the center of Japanese industry in the Southeastern United States as Japanese-affiliated companies have invested over $10.4 billion in Georgia, where over 600 Japanese-affiliated companies currently operate. These companies together employ nearly 37,000 workers state-wide. With more than 50 Georgia companies having major operations in Japan and more than 31,300 Japanese tourists travelling to Georgia each year, your participation will certainly strengthen friendship and the mutual understanding between the Japanese and American communities in Georgia and throughout the U.S.
