Takashima Sōichirō is the mayor of Fukuoka City, elected in 2010 at the age of 36. Originally from Ōita Prefecture, he began his professional career in television before joining the civil service. Takashima was re-elected in 2014, 2018, and 2022—each time receiving the highest number of votes in the history of Fukuoka City’s mayoral elections—and is now serving his fourth term. He has implemented a variety of policies based on the city's core management strategy: "Creating a virtuous cycle of urban growth and improved quality of life."
The sister city relationship between Atlanta, Georgia and Fukuoka, Japan was officially established in 2005, building on shared strengths as regional hubs for business, culture, and innovation. Over the past two decades, the partnership has fostered meaningful exchanges through student visits, cultural programs, and civic collaboration. Highlights include annual high school exchange programs, participation in the Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention, and joint celebrations at events like JapanFest. As the relationship marks its 20th anniversary in 2025, it continues to serve as a vibrant bridge between the American South and Japan’s Kyushu region.
