Kakizome is a traditional Japanese custom practiced at the beginning of the New Year. It is the first calligraphy of the year, where people write words or phrases that express their hopes, goals, or wishes for the coming year. Kakizome is a moment to reflect, reset, and start the year with intention.
In this workshop, participants will first learn the basics of Japanese calligraphy, including how to hold the brush, make simple strokes, and write basic characters. No prior experience is necessary.
After the practice session, each participant will choose a word or short phrase that represents their New Year’s goal, intention, or aspiration, and create their own Kakizome piece to take home.
This event is not about perfection, but about mindfulness, creativity, and experiencing Japanese culture in a calm and meaningful way. Beginners are very welcome.
RSVP required. Please sign up in advance.

Let’s Make Gyoza, Japan’s Favorite Dumpling!
Adapted from the Chinese dumpling Jiaozi, the soft dough wrapper with a savory meat or vegetarian filling is not hard to make. Pinch-Pleat-Repeat as you form perfect crescents. We will make two gyoza dishes: pan fried with a crispy bottom to eat with a dipping sauce and the other is Gyoza Nabe where we add the uncooked savory pillows to a simmering pot of winter vegetables. Homemade dipping sauces will be part of the menu. A full list of ingredients, recipes, and instructions will be sent the week of the class.

A Luncheon and Discussion on:
"Japan's Evolving Defense Policy: Implications for the U.S.-Japan Alliance and Asian Security"
with
Ryo Kiridori
Research Fellow at Japan's National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS)
Over the past decade, Japan has significantly updated its defense policy. In 2015, the government partially lifted restrictions on the exercise of collective self-defense. Since 2022, the defense budget has grown rapidly, and the Self-Defense Force has expanded its ability to project power far beyond Japan’s immediate territory. These represent significant shifts that would have been unimaginable only a few decades ago. How should we understand these developments? To what extent has Japan’s defense policy shifted from its previous course? What do these reforms mean for the U.S.–Japan Alliance and for peace and stability in the Western Pacific? What objectives is Japan seeking to achieve through these defense policy upgrades, and what challenges does it face? This luncheon will examine these questions to provide a deeper understanding of Japan’s evolving defense posture.
Thanks to the Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta for arranging
Mr. Kiridori's presentation.
